Parent Volunteers

Polar Bear Hockey implements a volunteer requirement for the families of all registered players. It’s quite simple: 1 hour worked = 1 point earned. Each family must provide service hours to meet the point requirements for the oldest registered player in their family. Earned points are tracked throughout the season between April 1st to March 31st of the following calendar year; if the points are not earned in full then the family will be charged the remaining buyout fees, calculated at $20/hour.

If your family would prefer to not provide volunteer service hours to meet your point requirement, a buyout option is available. The buyout option requires a payment at the time of player registration of $200 per 8U player, and $500 per 10U/12U/14U/16U/18U player.

All points must be earned and completed -OR- paid for by March 31st.

How do i get started?

1. Register as a USA Hockey Volunteer

This is done via the USA Hockey website: membership.usahockey.com

You will register yourself as a volunteer (similar process as when you registered your player, but as a volunteer the registration is FREE). You will be assigned a USA Hockey Confirmation Number. You will receive a USA Hockey Registration Confirmation email upon completion.  You will use the USA Hockey confirmation number in Step 2.

2. Register as a PBH Volunteer

This is done via the PBH website: polarbear-hockey.com

This part is critical as it ensures we can see your volunteer eligibility. You will register yourself as a PBH Volunteer by clicking “Registration” on the right side of the top menu, and selecting ‘Learn More’ in the Parent Volunteers box. You will then click “Register” in the "2025/2026 Volunteers' box. You will need to provide your USA Hockey Confirmation Number and complete the prompts that follow. You will receive a PBH Volunteer Registration Confirmation email upon completion.

3. Complete the SafeSport Training

This is completed on the USA Hockey website: usahockey.com/safesporttraining

You must have your USA Hockey Confirmation Number AND your own individual email address in order to complete this step!

This FREE 45-60 minute core training requires you to watch the videos and complete the necessary information. The Core Training is valid for 12 months. After that, there is a Refresher Course available for volunteers who simply need to be retrained for an additional season. After completing the Refresher Course for the third time, volunteers will be required to take the Core Training for the next season. You will receive a Safe Sport Completion Receipt email upon finishing the modules. Since you registered as a PBH Volunteer (in Step 1), the PBH Admins will automatically see your completed status.

4. Complete a Background Screen

This must be done via USA Hockey: www.usahockey.com/backgroundscreen

There is a fee of $30. Background checks are good for 2 years. You will receive a NCSI Background Screening Registration Confirmation email upon payment and submission. Since you registered as a PBH Volunteer (in Step 2), the PBH Admins will automatically see your submitted background check status.

You may forward the background check confirmation email to the Polar Bear Hockey Treasurer for reimbursement. With a passed background check and completion of your family’s required service hours, the treasurer will reimburse your family’s background check fees.

Volunteer Opportunities

Once you have completed all of the above steps, you are ready to start completing your required service hours. Using a web browser, you will log into the Polar Bear Hockey website and click the Volunteer link. Using the filter options, you may browse thru available volunteer opportunities.
